Software engineering

What is it that you do?

I work as a Software Engineer within CSD, in the Internal Apps team.

What does a day in the life look like for you?

My day usually consists of a couple of catch-up calls in the morning and then project work for the rest of the day. Sometimes, I’ll have Thursday afternoon to complete University work as that’s when my lectures fall.

What is your favourite thing about working at Capgemini?

My favourite thing about working at Capgemini is the ability to have a healthy work-life balance. I’m given the ability to prioritise my personal when it is needed, whilst also being given the guidance and support to continue working to my best ability.

What is your favourite Capgemini value?

My favourite Capgemini value is trust. The best practice of this value is being trusted by my managers to complete a task that I may not have been involved in (with guidance), that gives me the confidence to constantly improve and try new things, knowing that Ill have the opportunity to.

What apprenticeship are you studying?

Level 6 Digital Technology and Solutions with Aston University on the software engineer path that aligns with my job.

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

When I was in college for animation and vfx, I thought I wanted to go into animation as a career, but soon realized that animation was more of a hobby rather than a career aspiration for me. I spent a year working customer service a bit lost on what I wanted to do and kept hitting roadblocks when trying to figure out what degree to pursue. It never felt right, and eventually I decided I either didn’t want to go to University at all, or I’d do an apprenticeship so I can work and get a degree at the same time.

What advice would you give to students looking for next steps to get into tech after school/sixth form/college etc?

Search for apprenticeships. When coming into tech because it is such a sought-after career, you’re better off getting the work experience straight away to push you ahead of the curve.

Had you heard of Capgemini before joining?

I hadn’t heard of Capgemini before joining. It is completely different to what I originally imaged when I joined. I assumed it would be strict, and I would have to wear formal office wear to the office etc. It turned out to be a very laid-back!
